Mission Statement

Pittsburgh Public Schools are undergoing a major change replacing some comprehensive high schools with small, limited access, theme-based, grade 6-12 schools with limited athletic, extracurricular and elective offerings. The District has not involved the public in a relevant way in the high school reform planning process, and no master proposal for equitable and practicable locations and feeder patterns for the various schools and programs has been provided.

Parents United for Responsible Educational Reform ("PURE Reform") grew out of the movement to keep Schenley High School. All along, many parents had questions and concerns about high school reform in general, including concerns about high schools needing the most improvement but which have not been a focus of the reform process.

The mission of PURE Reform is to unite Pittsburgh parents from all backgrounds and from all neighborhoods in seeking for every child the education necessary to lead a productive and meaningful life. In furtherance of this mission PURE Reform will:

  1. Review Pittsburgh public high school reform initiatives;
  2. Raise relevant questions about these reform initiatives;
  3. Seek answers to these questions; and
  4. Seek transparency and effective public input in the reform process.
While the focus of our effort is currently on high school reform, that focus is expected to expand as additional reforms are proposed.
